New York City sits at a crossroads. After several years of unprecedented economic growth, layoffs are up, foreclosures are on the rise, cost of living is trending upwards and government budget cuts seem likely. Meanwhile, recent studies indicate income disparity is growing and more New Yorkers are having difficulty meeting their familiy's basic needs.
What's behind these trends? Why is it increasingly difficult for 'working class' residents to continue to live and raise families in NYC? Should we care? What's been the specific fallout for people of color? New York has always been considered a city of immigrants -- does it still provide opportunities for immigrants?
What can we do to change these trends and create opportunities for working-class NYC residents?
KAPA will host a panel discussion that explores these and other questions confronting working-class and immigrant families in New York City. This event is co-sponsored by the Action Council of the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF).

KAPA was founded in 2006 by a group of Korean American New Yorkers
to promote a progressive agenda of civil rights, immigrant rights, and
economic justice, for Korean Americans and the broader community, through
political action and education. Our goal is not simply to elect Korean
or Asian American candidates to office, but to mobilize the Korean American
community to maximize our political influence in support of candidates
and allies who share our agenda for equal access to affordable housing,
health care and education, and increased funding for immigrant social
services
The Action Council is a group of young Asian Pacific American professionals who support the work of the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF) through fundraising, outreach, and educational activities that raise awareness of CACF's mission and goals. The CACF is a non-profit children's rights organization that aims to improve the quality of life for Asian Pacific American children and families in New York City.
